YouTube has become the 'turn to' place for people who want to watch great content on the web. There's so much on there, from videos of animals and people doing the funniest things, to Hollywood blockbuster movies, specially made for YouTube television shows, and great music videos both classic and modern. It's not only a place to watch content but also where community users can upload content as well. This brings potential problems as well, however, as much of the content uploaded to the platform is bound by strict copyright rules.

It's time to run through some common YouTube copyright problems, and give advice on how to avoid them.

Problem 1. Avoid Uploading Copyright Material

Copyright is a legal entity that is there to product creative people, which includes musicians, singers, artists, photographers, writers, and producers. The amount of time that copyright lasts varies from country to country, but it typically extends well beyond the life of the person who created the particular work in question. For example, in the United States the copyright on music made today will last for seventy years after the death of the artist.

The most sure fire way to avoid infringing copyright on YouTube is to completely avoid uploading material that is copyrighted in this way. There is no limit to the amount of copyright material you use, so the use of one second of protected material is just as much of an infringement as the use of one minute. Failure to comply with the copyright rules will lead to YouTube suspending your video, and they could also suspend your account, or worse.

Problem 2. Gaining a License

You see music being used everywhere on YouTube, especially in adverts and trailers, so how can this be when much of it will be covered by the copyright regulations? The simple answer is that the music will have been licensed for use on the website, thus avoiding YouTube copyright problems. This means that the person or company uploading the video has been in touch with the copyright holder and received written permission to use the content, via what is known as a synchronization license.

A fee will usually have been involved to secure the license, and there may be strict conditions involved: for example, the copyright holder may have stipulated that only so many seconds of music can be used, that the license only lasts for a specified period, or that the music can be used for non-commercial purposes only. It's not only big companies that can do this, as an individual you can contact copyright holders and obtain a license, although if you do so you may have to send proof of this license to YouTube to prevent them removing your video, or for them to restore it to their site.

Problem 3. Use Royalty Free Music

We all love the big hit songs that everyone knows, but the fact is that it can be prohibitively expensive to use those legally in your YouTube videos. There is another solution, however, and that's the use of royalty free music and images. Royalty free music is either music that has gone beyond its copyright period (a famous example of this would be the world's most sung song, 'Happy Birthday to You'), or music that has been made freely available for download and reproduction.

Some artists are happy to see their creativity reach as wide an audience as possible, so specify that it can be freely used. Use a search engine to find royalty free music, there's lots of it available in every style you can think of, and you may find the track that's just perfect for your video.

Problem 4. Disputes over Your Own Material

If you write and perform your own material, then there's no better place to showcase it than on YouTube, but that doesn't always mean that you'll avoid YouTube copyright problems. If the public like it, then you could even find that your music goes viral, and that's just how some of the hottest stars of today started out.

You may find however, that YouTube wrongly prohibit your video on copyright grounds, believing that you are performing lyrics or music that belong to somebody else. If this happens, go to your video and click on 'copyright notices' to the right. Then click 'file a dispute'. Click 'the video is my original content and I own all the rights to it'. After this you'll need to provide your digital signature and then submit your claim.

Remember, copyright infringement is a crime and it can result in damage to your reputation as well as a hefty fine, so it's important to understand YouTube copyright problems and take steps to avoid them.
