WMV vs MP4, The Differences Between WMV and MP4

WMV stands for Windows Media File. The format was developed by Microsoft for the express purpose of providing media formatting for Windows based systems. Created based on the MPEG-4 platform, the first iteration of the WMV format came to exist in 1999 but the standard wasn't adopted by SMPTE until 2006. Both the WMV and MP4 file formats afford the end user an easy way to create high quality multimedia videos that are compressed in nature. Each file format has its pros and cons, though. WMV is a compressed multimedia format, but is not considered a lossy format, whereas and MP4 files are considered "Lossy", because information that's not immediately relevant is discarded when the file is saved in either of these formats. For this reason, and some others, WMV files tend to be much larger than MP4 files can be, and are not necessarily suited to the same end use case.

Part 1. WMV vs MP4, The Differences Between WMV and MP4

File Extension MP4 WMV
Developer MP4 was developed as an interation of Apple's original QuickTime file format, generally noted as MOV. The QuickTime format once dominated the internet, but has now retreated in popularity except as it's used in the Apple family of products. The MP4 format, however, has become even more widely used and popular due to its cross-platform compatibility. The MP4 file format utilizes the MPEG-4 coding and is an ISO standard file type that's also sometimes referred to with the extension .m4a and .m4p. WMV is a file format developed by Microsoft. Unlike MP4, it's not a lossy platform, and it has been adopted for high resolution, production uses like DVDs, Bluray and other dense video and multimedia formats. The ability of a WMV file to contain Digital Rights Management information is a key driver in its adoption by large production and professional video organizations.
History The Apple .MOV file type, also known as QuickTime, was deeply wed to the Apple family of devices. In 1999, however, the public sector modified and extended the MOV file type in order to add functionality and increase cross-platform video capabilities. The governing body ISO monitors releases of the MPEG-4 file format family. Iterations of the MP4 file type have included releases of Initial Object Descriptors, and other MPEG family functionality. While WMV was initially created in 1999 by Microsoft, it was iterated and submitted to SMPTE for an award of standardization in 2003, in its 9th version. In 2006, the format was approved as an open standard, which has allowed it to extend into new use cases and expand its reach significantly.
Popularity MP4 was designed to be cross-platform and standardized for use in multiple ways. Today it is extremely popular, potentially the most popular video and multimedia format used on the internet. Its compression capability, while lossy, is impressive and allows for streaming. WMV files are hugely popular and used in formats and applications that may be hidden in plain sight. For instance, most DVDs and BluRays are WMV file format in nature. While end users decry their built in DRM functionality and the problems it attends, it shows no signs of decreasing in popularity.
Data streams The MPEG-4 file type is wrapped into a container, which is referred to as MP4. The container is what keeps the video, audio and other contents of a multimedia presentation together and helps a player to present it. A special index file known as an MPEG-4 BIF tells the player where to find the relevant content files inside the container. The WMV file uses the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container to encapsulate the elements of the multimedia presentation. The AVI file encapsulation can also be leveraged, and while this doesn't allow for DRM, does allow for greater compression.
Metadata The MP4 container can wrap not only the information required for the presentation, but also additional information like titles, additional supplementary content and additional or alternate audio.
WMV files themselves are able to support tagging and metadata like cover art. The option of further encapsulating a WMV file as an AVI, however, limits the metadata potential.
Pros 1. MP4 file format is fairly universal and standard.
2. Devices running Linux, Windows, iOS and Android are all capable of supporting MP4 files.
3. Compression is possible with MP4 files.
1. WMV is a great option for files which must maintain the highest levels of quality.
2. WMV is a good choice for files which will potentially benefit from DRM.
3. WMV is a widely adopted format used by many appliances and devices.
Cons 1. The process of encapsulation in MP4 does discard unnecessary data, making it a lossy file format.
2. The file size is still generally fairly large.
3. MP4 encapsulation is not a proprietary model.
1. WMV, while an open standard and used widely in applications like DVDs and BluRays, is not suitable for some of the more common video applications today because of its resulting file size.
2. Streaming WMV files is a length and impractical process.
3. Users are frustrated by DRM encapsulation.
Used by Almost anything that plays videos! Appliances, cars, and portable electronics, in addition to computers and smartphones. Many different types of devices can interpret WMV, but it is most used in high-density video situations like DVDs.
